Hair Council Hosts Event at The House of Commons

The Hair Council and selected guests were invited by Rupa Huq MP, to enjoy afternoon tea on the terraces of the UK Parliament, Westminster.

A small group of Hair Council members and supporters had the pleasure of enjoying a social soiree in the sunshine on the banks of the River Thames. It was an opportunity to reflect on its quest to make State Registration mandatory, celebrate those that have championed the cause, and hear from two MPs who are supporting this mission.

“I have massive respect for all that you do. You are a pivotal part of the high street and the campaign you have for state registration is really important,” said Rupa Huq MP.

Julia Lopez MP also delivered a heartfelt welcome to guests. “It’s been a real privilege this year to represent this industry. You are anchors in the high street and the people that provide a sense of heart. It is a credit to Gareth for getting this campaign up and running. You are continuing to give people employment rights and career opportunities, so thank you for doing all that. I ask all of you to lobby your MPs, because we shouldn’t keep taking industries like this for granted. Incredibly important grass roots small businesses are keeping our high streets going. From me to you, thank you for everything you do.”

Registrar & Chief Executive, Gareth Penn, shared how State Registration is essential for anyone who wants to be given the respect that their training deserves, and becoming a member of the Hair Council is the first step in actioning this. “We are helping to shape the future for every small business in this country, it is full credit to all of those that have been involved in this campaign. There is a lot more work we need to do. We are a skilled, essential unified workforce who contributes thousands of jobs and billions of pounds to the UK Exchequer. We are making excellent progress towards our mandatory registration, because that is still the foundation of what the hairdressing Council is all about. The more of us that are State Registered, the more of a voice we have,” he said.

Long term supporter and campaigner for the Hairdressing Council, Andrew Barton, was awarded with a Master Professional certificate for his commitment and dedication. “For over two decades I have lent my voice to the Hair Council to push this cause forward and to shout loudly about what we need, and that is mandatory registration in this industry. Thank you very much, this means the world to me,” he said.
