Right now, anyone can call themselves a hair professional in the UK.

We’re the movement working to change that.

You Deserve to be Recognised

Right now, anyone can legally practice – qualified or not

State registration is mandatory for doctors, nurses, dentists and most personal care services.

But not for hairdressers or barbers.

We’re working to change that, but we can’t do it without you

Testimonials

Professional certification gives our industry credibility and being a member of like-minded professionals.

Integrity of organisation and the pursuit of raising standards through mandatory registration.

Being single, a sole trader and opening my own business, I wanted to be part of a professional body that I could go to for advice if needed.

I joined because I believe our industry deserves to be recognised not just as a service, but as a skilled profession built on knowledge, responsibility, and human connection.

I strongly believe in regulation for our industry and raising the standards, there are too many unprofessional hairdressers and barbers lowering the tone of what should be a respected industry.

Anyone can pick up a tint brush, not everyone chooses to be accountable for what they do. Being state registered, shows I back my work with recognised standards, ongoing education, and a responsibility to do things properly, not just quickly.

For my clients, it means peace of mind. You’re not guessing if your hair is in safe hands — you know it is. Every service is backed by training, standards, and a level of care that goes beyond ‘just getting your hair done.

I believe our industry is undervalued and wanted to show my credibility as a professional hairdresser. We need a voice and the Hair Council is our voice to the government to help support us.

It’s important that everyone knows we work to high professional standards and get recognition for the skills. I joined to show my clients I’m serious and this is my career not just for fun.

To join like-minded professional hairdressers and bring about registration for our industry.” “It's good to have a professional council behind you.
